Stripy Top I found the most amazingly soft yarn while away with work for a few days, and decided I had to have it. The design is heavily inspired by a few other tops I have, that I know fit me well. I loved making it, and finished in less than a month :-D

Gaia I had some gorgeous yarn languishing in an unloved (and thus unlikely to be finished) WIP, and had been looking around for something else to use it for. I randomly came across the pattern for this in my ravelry highlights one day, and knew the yarn would be perfect for it. It's great for work when the AC gets a tad too much. I do wish it had been slightly bigger, but not enough that I feel the need to redo it.

Ida's Genser Made for a friend of mine. Knit with much bulkier yarn than I usually use, which did hurt my hands a bit, but I loved how quickly it knit up, and am quite happy with the finished result. Fortunately my friend was too :-D

Perseverance MKAL
Finally finished this yesterday!!! REALLY happy with how it turned out. I still need to block it, so it's not finished-finished-finished, but I greatly enjoyed snuggling under it this morning!

And finally, the project I'm currently working on...
Maisie Sweater
I'd forgotten how MUCH I love working with Malabrigo Arroyo! The yarn's expensive, but worth every penny! I've had this in my stash for ages, but finally decided to do something with it, and the Maisie Sweater was in my library, beginning to be knit. It was the perfect match, and I absolutely adore it. Can't wait for this to be done :-D

However, all the ones I came across were way too expensive for me to actually consider buying - especially online.

Cue end of July, where Lars and I took Nina's three kids with us on a long-delayed trip to Hamburg, Germany (we were supposed to go in April 2020... we all know how THAT turned out...) to show them Miniature Wunderland. We'd taken Jordan there back in 2018'ish, and he really enjoyed it, so wanted to share the experience with his sisters as well. I never got around to writing about that trip here, but we had a terrific time and as always I absolutely LOVED spending time with the kids. Isabella even got me a sunflower lanyard of my very own!! So sweet.

*Ahrem*, but I digress. The giftshop at MiWuLa is filled with all sorts of gadgets, puzzles... and miniature kits of all sorts. One of those being the most adorable miniature library/book shop. I immediately called Isabella over, "Look, look, look, look!!!"
Isabella: "Auntie!! You've always wanted a book nook!!" (so sweet of her to remember! She takes after her mother in that regard!) "You have to get it!"
Me: "Oh, I'm gonna!!".
The kit was only €25 - a steal at that price. And since they had a bunch pre-assembled, I could see what they looked like all set up, and knew that it would look AMAZING in my library :-D

I was a good girl and didn't open the kit while we were away (didn't want to risk losing pieces, and it's not like I could get started on it anyway), but immediately after returning home, I ripped it open and spent pretty much every free minute at the dining table for the next 3-4 days cutting, glueing, painting, assembling and even fixing electronics! (SO proud of myself that I got the lamp to work by myself!!!) Those of you who follow me on Instagram will have seen the progress photos already, but I have to share here as well :-D
So excited!!

The kit all laid out... at this stage I did wonder if I was getting in over my head, but despite the instructions being a tad vague at times, they were clear enough when it mattered, and I managed okay.

Getting started...

My second attempt at this book case. I made two mistakes making it - the first one I fixed (adding the drawer front on the wrong side!), the second I kept and called a design feature! (the drawer was supposed to be at the very bottom, not one shelf up... who cares ;-) )

The frames had to be painted. I'd forgotten how much I love to paint! Ended up giving them three coats I think, as the wood kept absorbing the paint.

So many books!!! The kit has a total of 107 in 4 different styles. I love that they aren't just all the same. In a perfect world I would have printed out my own book covers, but that would have taken WAY too long, and would perhaps be slightly overkill for something you can't even see! ... I may still do it for some of them though ;)

I decided I did NOT like the original carpet (first photo - would be cute for a kitchen - not so much for a library), so played around with some other scraps, and decided on this.

Almost done! However, I decided I wanted personal photos for the walls, instead of the pictures provided by the kit, so had to wait until I had time to print them out (in the end, Henriette did so for me :-D )

Holding a place of honour in my library.

Getting the lamp to work was definitely the biggest challenge, and it's ugly as up close. But I don't even care - it works, and I'm totally chuffed that I managed! The finished kit fits my library perfectly (even if it does take up quite a bit of room ;-) ), and I absolutely love it!

I kinda want to make more kits now, because it was SO satisfying to get everything sorted, but there aren't any other kits that have as obvious a place to put the final object, so while they'd be heaps of fun to make, the finished object would end up being clutter... which would be a shame. I may still change my mind though.Mariahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14280854114229038266noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6801294512243352066.post-72595745059698876342022-05-11T01:58:00.004-07:002022-05-11T01:58:56.049-07:00WIP Wednesday - May EditionOff the needles:
Henni asked me if I'd crochet some Easter decorations for her. We took a quick look through ravelry, but she never made it past the first page, as she immediately fell in love with these chickens. Don't blame her - they are adorable! And it's the first time I've put make-up on my crafting! (Rouge under the eyes)

Project "Knitting through my WIPs" continues, and I've actually managed to finish the Almond Tee finally! I cast it on last spring, but it quickly got to warm to work on, so it's been dormant ever since. Of course it's now much to warm to wear, but ah well - it'll be ready for next autumn. Of course AFTER sewing in all three buttons I discovered that they were too small and keep popping out, so I'll have to do something about that... eventually.

I made another sweater for Hugo (to be used next winter, so made large on purpose). However, it did NOT want to behave! I've had to adapt the pattern quite a bit, as the yarn's a lot thicker than what it calls for (so there's no WAY I could get gauge), and so far I've had to rip back THREE TIMES! Fortunately the fourth time was the charm, and I managed to finish it finally. Hope it'll fit!

After my many years of knitting I have amassed huge amounts of scraps, so now I'm trying to figure out how to use it! Some of the fingering weight scraps I use for the cozy memories blanket, but there's still SO much left over. I recently got the idea to use it for a crocheted cardigan - figuring that if I could find one that was fairly lenient with its gauge requirements, then that might work. So last weekend I searched Ravelry and came across the Campfire Cardigan. I sorted out a bunch of suitable scraps and started working. I absolutely loved working on it (it's a really brilliant construction!) and adore the way it turned out. It was so satisfying to finally be using all these old scraps - even handspun!

On the needles:
Still working on the MKAL blanket. It's a year-long project, so obviously has quite a ways to go yet. I've finished clue 4 and am quite happy with how the colours are working out. I've decided on a progression of colours that I think will work well - time will show :-D

On the Needles
Strangely enough I only have two active WIPs at the moment (don't ask me about my UFOs though....) - mostly because I just finished a number of things and am swatching for several others ;-)

I'm knitting a pair of socks for one of Henriette's colleagues. She commisioned three pairs from me last year, and liked them so much that she's now asked for another 5! She's a knitter herself (but doesn't do socks), so she knows how much time it takes, and therefore pays really well. I've told her I'd be happy to do it for half, but she insists, so I'm definitely happy to knit her more! This first pair allowed me to play around with colourwork a bit. She wanted it plain with a contrasting toe and fun fade - so I tried my best. I finished the first one in just a few days - the yarn is awesome, so it flew off the needles.

After finishing a bunch of things for others (see below ;-) ), I decided it was time to make something for myself and picked up an old UFO (unfinished object). I started this Almond Tee last year sometime, and then put it down for the summer (the yarn's very warm) and just never picked it up again! Chances are I'll finished it just as it's getting too hot to wear again, but ah well - at least I'll have it for next fall then! I've just finished the body and need to pick up for the sleeves.

I finished the Telemark pullover shortly after my last post and finally got the chance to gift it to Hugo last week. Fortunately Ida (his mother) loved it and promised to send me photos of him wearing it :-D

The elephants are my own design. I've added the chart to my ravelry project page.
I went to visit Nina weekend before last, so worked hard on finishing the Granny Shrug Cocoon in time. I was a bit nervous about it, as I thought the fit was slightly weird, but once again Nina proved that she knows what looks good on her. She absolutely rocked it!

It got a bit dull to make the giant granny square in a plain yarn, but the end result was well worth it. Still, if I ever make this again, I think I'll use a varigated or self-striping yarn.... or just thicker yarn, so the square is done faster! :-D Once the square is done, the rest takes no time at all!

And finally I made a bit of a joke gift for Henriette. She's one of the few people I know who uses placemats instead of a tablecloth, so once I saw these mandela placemats I knew I had to make them for her! And of course I had to make them match her, Lars' and my chosen colours for game nights - so blue, green and red it was! I probably actually like the green one the best myself (the red ended up being a bit to loud due to the yellow, but the alternative was pink and that looked weird), but the three look great together. I'm seeing her on Friday, so she'll get them there.

I don't actually have all that much actively on my needles at the moment though, so I'll post it as a Finished Object Friday post instead :-D
Since last post I've started and finished Squish. No longer remember what made me want to make it, but it's cute, so who cares :-D A bit fiddly to make, and the dark blue is a tad too dark to actually show the face, but oh well. Sometimes you're allowed to just be silly.

One of my friends had a son last September, and I told him to just let me know if they ever wanted some handknit items for him. His girlfriend took me up on the offer, and asked if I'd knit a vest or a pullover. You know me - why not both! So I've recently finished a vest for him, and am currently working on the Telemark Pullover - just need to knit the sleeves, so should hopefully finish next week sometime. The elephants are my own design - I just think they're cute!

And last, but DEFINITELY not least, after two+ years on the needles I've finally, finally, FINALLY finished the genser I showed off last time. The pattern was really badly written - confusing and with several mistakes - so it took quite a bit of frogging and fudging to make it work, but now I'm done!!! And fortunately I loved the finished object, so it was worth the hassle. Definitely don't see myself making this again anytime soon though!!!

I'm going to try to do one a month, but we'll see if I manage :-P
My crafting goal of 2022 is two-fold: finish some of my long-languishing WIPs and knit from stash! I'm well under way with both already!
Off the Needles
I did a lot of Christmas crafting in December. Not all of it is worth showing off, but I really love these Christmas baubles I found. Each takes about 3 hours to make and are just adorable! I see a lot more of these coming in my future. I kept two for myself and gave two to colleagues.

Another coworker gave birth a few months ago. She's still off on maternity leave, but I finished a second Knut for her, so I can have it ready when she comes by the office to show off her baby :-D It's really cute, but I've made two now, so I think I'm done with this pattern. But we'll see - I've been wrong before.

Last summer I bought some really lovely yarn while we were on vacation, and I finally found a good use for it! I knew I wanted to hold it double to really make the most of the marled effect that would give, which meant I didn't have enough to add sleeves, AND I wanted to knit it in the round, so I'd have to do as little yarn management as possible. Elena Nodel and her gorgeous Cosmopolitan tunic to the rescue! (Although I did leave out the turtleneck - I didn't have enough yarn, and liked the roll of the natural cast on).

I finished this in just 8 days! SUCH a quick knit!
My oldest nephew asked me if I'd knit him a scarf with stripes. "Sure! What kind of stripes? Thick stripes, thin stripes, or fibonacci stripes?" "Oooh! Fibonacci stripes!" My nephew is as much of a geek as I am ;-) We celebrated Christmas Day together, so I made sure to have it ready for him by then.

(He's practising his "Blue Steel" look ;-) )
On the Needles
Nina asked me to make her "a shawl that is also a sweater", which made perfect sense to me, so I went looking for suitable patterns. We ended up deciding on the Granny Cocoon Shrug, so I'm now crocheting my first garment! At the moment it mostly just looks like a giant granny square, but Liz promises me that it turns into a very comfy cardigan once I add sleeves ;-)

Almost done with the square - then I get to add shaping! I'd forgotten how much more yarn crochet uses though!!!
To follow up on my own private WIP challenge, I picked up an old sweater that's been languishing for more than two years! I cast this on back in October 2019, but the pattern was SO poorly written that I put it down until I could brave 'translating' it. I finally gave it a go and think I'm managing alright? But it is without a doubt the worst written pattern I've tried yet. I also think there are some significant errors in it, but it's so confusing to read, that I'm actually not entirely sure. I'm glad I have significant knitting experience by now, or I'd be totally lost. As it is, I'm wondering how much I'll have to frog.... :-P I'm almost done with the first sleeve, but a tad worried it'll be too long. Also, it's supposed to be oversized, which the body isn't, but the sleeves ARE, so I'm wondering if it'll look too weird, and I'll have to figure out how to adapt it to make it skinnier, while still keeping the armhole decreases even enough to fit into the decreases made on the body... (cue Maria's head exploding). Ah well, we'll see. Fortunately the yarn is AMAZING to work with! SO soft and light.

(I redid the neckline after taking this photo. The shoulder straps were WAY too thin).
Aaaaand finally, Liz thoroughly tempted me to cast on a year-long mystery knit-along together with her :-D We did a mystery crochet-along together last year (although that was only 6 months) and both really enjoyed participating together, so when she found a MKAL that was just starting, she suggested that we did it again! At first I said no, as I didn't have enough worsted weight yarn in my stash (see goal of knitting from stash!), but then Liz told me that she was knitting hers out of sock yarn held double, and not only did I have heaps of sock yarn in stash that I wouldn't mind giving up for this, I also had some scraps I could finally make good use of, AND I love the way varigated sock yarn looks when held double!!! So in the end she convinced me! We had a long FaceTime session rummaging through my stash to find the perfect combination of skeins, and I finished clue 1 this past Monday. Now to wait (im-)patiently for clue 2 sometime next month!

This is an awesome book! Extremely detailed and useful for knitters no matter if they want to try their hand at designing or not.

The first part is aimed at designers and knitters who need to modify yoked sweaters. Beware, you'll find maths. Loads and loads and LOADS of maths! All very clearly laid out, and with good examples that makes it easier to understand, but you'll definitely want to follow along with paper and pencil next to the book, as you enter in your own measurements. These are NOT formulas you should ever expect to be able to learn off by heart, but it is a brilliant reference guide, and absolutely indispensable for figuring out where and how to include your increase rows.

But don't worry! Just as it all starts to become too much, and your head starts spinning from all the numbers and formulas, you get to the carrot at the end of the maths - because the second (and larger) part is all about the patterns! 15 absolutely gorgeous pullovers and cardigans, ready to be swatched for and cast on. The patterns are clearly written, with nice, large charts and photos both of the details and of the full length garment. I've found at least 5 I want to cast on right away, and can't wait to go stash-diving for yarn for them.

Sprinkled out throughout the book are quotes from the various designers, with small insights into the specific designs themselves, or their approach to designing in general.Mariahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14280854114229038266noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6801294512243352066.post-68512753000326317962021-11-15T04:15:00.001-08:002021-11-15T04:15:01.888-08:00Review: Knitting Modular Shawls<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1539510330l/38746172.jpg" width="100px" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5237357512197709730" />Title: Knitting Modular Shawls, Wraps and Stoles

This book is more than a pattern book - it is a recipe book. In addition to providing 20 gorgeous shawl patterns, it also provides instructions for a "Choose Your Own Adventure" approach to designing your own shawls, with a LOT of increasingly elaborate stitch patterns (I was going to give an exact number, but there were too many, and I lost track while counting). I've been a knitter for awhile, and still some of them were completely new to me. My fingers are itching right now to sit down and play around with the components to create a truly personal shawl.

All stitch patterns are given as both charts and written instructions, with clear photos of each, knit up in a light yarn that really shows off the stitch definition. There is a HUGE variety in the stitch patterns, so it's obvious that Melissa Leapman put a lot of thought and work into this collection - it's definitely not something she could just have phoned in. I'm especially impressed by the section on adding horizontal or vertical insertions to shawl designs - a very simple design-element that few patterns incorporate, but which is extremely effective and really makes your shawl stand out. As for the section on borders, I'm biased - I absolutely love a nice perpendicular border, and Melissa has some amazing ones to try out here.

Photographs of the 20 patterns provided are spread out throughout the book. Each shawl is beautifully modeled, and shows wingspan, a close-up and a glamour shot for the full effect of the shawl. Project #10 is my personal favourite, and I can't wait to cast it on!

I know I'm gushing, but I'm really impressed by this book, and can't think of anything I'd add or change to make it better. It's not aimed at beginners, as it does require you to have some previous knowledge of knitting shawls, but I'd definitely recommend this book to any semi-experienced knitter who wants to take the next step towards creating his or her own designs.Mariahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14280854114229038266noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6801294512243352066.post-71890186517924838382021-11-03T07:30:00.004-07:002021-11-03T07:58:25.464-07:00WIP - November EditionI was going to post this last week and completely forgot! It's been aaaaaages since I did one of these posts last, so no surprise, I've got a LOT of things to show off :-D
Off the Needles
First is my Summer Sunset. I finished this back in August and absolutely love it. The yarn is a cotton-acrylic blend, meaning it's actually cool enough to wear during the summer. I wouldn't have minded if it had been just a taaaaaad longer, but at the time I was afraid that the orange would get too overwhelming, as the orange section would have been a lot longer than the others. I think it would have been alright, but never mind. It's long enough that I don't mind too much.

A ton of my friends have had babies recently, so I've been crocheting a bunch of stuffed animals. They tend to be quite fiddly, but always turn out to be worth it :-D

One of my nieces has turned into a huge fan of the TV show Friends (which I find kinda amusing, considering how dated it is by now), so as a surprise, I decided to make her a Friends hat!! I used the Hamilton hat as a template, and replaced the Hamilton quotes with Friends quotes instead ("She's her lobster", "Pivot", "London Baby" etc.). I'm ridiculously chuffed with how it turned out, and just hope she'll like it too!

And finally I've finished a test-knit of yet another sweater. I didn't really have time for more obligation knitting, but I loved this pattern so much, that I just had to knit it! I'm glad I did too. It was a bit of a struggle to finish on time, but it's quickly become one of my most worn pieces! There were a bunch of mods I've have done if it hadn't been a test knit (most noticeably - added a bit of length and changed it to be knit in the round!!!), but even as-is it's a great layering piece.

On the Needles
At the moment I'm mostly knitting socks. They're a tad boring to show off though, so I'll leave them for when they become finished objects.

I have returned to working a bit on the Phoenix blanket though, and have managed an entire additional section. So I've know finished 7 out of 11 sections. Hope I'll have enough yarn to complete them all, but fortunately I can basically just add a border whenever and call it done. The colour selection is determined 100% by whatever yarn I had available in stash and I would never have chosen them if I'd gone shopping for the blanket... but they somehow just work and I'm really happy with how it's coming along. It's going to be huge though! It's already about 120cm across!

I received this ebook from Netgalley in return for an honest review.

This is not your usual book of knitting patterns. Instead it is a book of ideas. Ideas of how to turn everyday events into knitting projects, and begin seeing both those events and your knitting in a new light.

"Knit the Sky" lists 31 project ideas as well as inspiration on how to invent your own project. It does list 12 basic patterns to help you get started with the projects, but also encourages you to branch out, and use whatever pattern you feel best fits the spirit of the project.

I loved the idea of knitting your everyday life and was quickly taken in by the concept, so even though some of the ideas were a tad too twee for me to tackle, or followed a path that wasn't relevant for me to follow, I walked away from the book with a great appreciation of what Lea Redmond was trying to do... Not to mention a great desire to try (or to have tried, if I had known of them in the past) some of the projects mentioned.

For instance the title concept of knitting the sky. Similar to the well-known project of knitting a temperature scarf, this is a year-long project of knitting the colour of the sky.

Other favourites include:
"Sweet Possibilities" where you use gumball machines to help you chose colours for a project (although I might use coloured marbles instead - not being a huge fan of gumballs).
"The Mood Ring Cowl", that has to fit the colours of the cowl to your mood.
"Monsters under Your Bed", where your inner insomniac comes out to play.
"Play By Play" that allows me to combine my husbands interest of soccer with my own knitting hobby.
"Navigating By Heart" where you knit a well-traveled road.
"K1 B1", that combines meditation and knitting
"Mind the Gap" - although that really only works in a city with lots of public transportation. Copenhagen has that though, and I'm kinda itching to get started on this!
"Pins and Needles" where you knit a teeny-tiny project!
"Dormitory Hop" - probably my very favourite of the lot, and I would have loved to have thought of this back at boarding school. Not a project that's relevant for me to do now, but one that I'd recommend to any knitter setting out to meet new friends.
"Party Popper", which is a fun idea for passing on yarn to others.

So that's easily a third of all the projects mentioned, that I'd like to try out for myself. Definitely good value for a knitting book :)Mariahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14280854114229038266noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6801294512243352066.post-21649183105416252732021-10-13T00:00:00.001-07:002021-10-13T00:00:23.479-07:00Review: Anyone Can Crochet Amigurumi Animals<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1634107356l/59069268.jpg" width="100px" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5237357512197709730" />Title: Anyone Can Crochet Amigurumi Animals

"Anyone Can Crochet Amigurumi Animals" is a new collection of 15 cute anthropomorphized amigurumi animals. From foxes and hippos to koalas and giraffes, the pattern collection has something to offer to just about anybody. I'm especially keen on trying out the bee myself... a bee in trousers with suspenders? What's not to like!

All the patterns have a ton of details, making them perhaps a bit time-consuming and fiddly to make, but the end project is so worth it, as they all look really, really cute.

Each pattern comes with a detailed introduction of yarn used, and expected size at the given gauge, and the instructions are very clear and with lots of photos along the way. I'd perhaps not recommend it to a complete beginner, as there are a LOT of details to each pattern, but the book includes an introduction of which yarn to choose and what hook to use, as well as a complete glossary with all the stitches to use, and tips and tricks for people new to amigurumi, so who knows - these cute animals may be just the push some people need, to get started crocheting toys.
After 27 long weeks (hey, it was a CAL!) I finished the crocheted afghan a few weeks ago. It's been too hot to really appreciate it, but I do like the way it turned out. It'll come in VERY handy in a few months' time!

I LOVE the yarn I used for it - it's a simple acrylic, but SO soft, and very affordable! - but unfortunately I got it off a British website, so thanks to Brexit, it's really expensive for me to get more of it :-( I'll have to see if I can find a suitable alternative here in Denmark... or just stock up when I get to go to the UK next!
Even though I already have two sweaters for myself on the needles, I cast on something new for myself ;-) I do have an excuse though - both sweaters were pure wool, and we've been going through a heatwave, so it was much too hot to even contemplate picking up either of those. Instead I cast on a cotton-acrylic top for myself, and loved the project so much that I finished it in just a few weeks!!! I'm rarely this monogamous, but sometimes you just find exactly the right project at exactly the right time - and so it was for me with this one!

Kris asked if I would make some critters for her granddaughter, and of course I said yes right away! I love crafting for others, and stuffed toys are so cute! I've finished 3 so far, and have one more I'm still making up my mind on.

I've also finished another African flower animal - a turtle this time. I've LOVED all three hippos I've made, so I was eager to try one of her other patterns, but unfortunately this one wasn't as fun to make. It's just... not as cute, somehow? And a LOT more of a hassle to make! I originally intended it for a babygift for one of my friends, but it turned out way too large, so I think it'll just go into my gift pile instead. I'm sure I'll find a good use for it.

On the Needles
No fewer than THREE friends of mine are pregnant and due this September, so I've been knitting and crocheting lots and lots of baby stuff!
-- Two Baby Surprise Jackets that are completely done but for the buttons. I found a new way of doing the seaming which was SO much easier, and added an icord edging, which I think gives it lovely polished look. I adore this pattern, have made 5 of them already and foresee making many more. It is basically my go-to project.

I actually finished the crocheted koala the very next day after my last update! It turned out really cute, I think. Haven't yet found a recipient for it, but that'll come.

Henriette's vest is finished-finished, but not finished-finished-finished. That is, I've finished the knitting and blocked it, so I'm going to count it here. I still have to sew in the buttons. Henriette brought it home with her, as she wanted to check if her mother had some buttons that might work. It turned out REALLY well, and fortunately fits her perfectly. I'm going to take some modeled photos with her once the buttons are on, but couldn't wait that long to show it off :-D

On the Needles
My oldest niece inspired me to knit another sweater, so I've cast on for the Almond Tee. It has SUCH an interesting constructions as you knit each shoulder separately, and join them together with a 3 needle bind-off in the back! I've joined it in the round now, so the rest should be fairly straight forward.

I'm still working on the CAL afghan. We're 15 squares in now (the clue for the 16th coming today!) out of a total of 25 + border. I'm still really enjoying it and love the yarn! It's acrylic, but it's the softest acrylic I've come across in a long time.

Working on the CAL inspired me to start another crocheted afghan (as I got impatient waiting for the next clue all the time), so I started the Phoenix blanket which I've wanted to make for quite awhile. I'm using yarn from stash, so was a bit limited in my colour selection, but actually think it works quite well in all its randomness. And it's SUCH a fun project! Each round takes forever now, and it probably won't be too much longer till the weather grows too warm for me to work on it, but it's already at a decent enough size for me to use as a lap blanket during my morning devotion each day :-D

But first - my few works in progress...

On the Needles
This weekend I signed up for my first test crochet. I just couldn't help myself when I saw the adorable aragumi koala ready for testing! It's VERY fiddly though, so more slow going than I had expected it to be. I'm about half way, having finished the body, the head and one arm. I still have one arm, both ears, the snout and all the detailing left to go. The deadline is this Sunday, which should be managable.
I've finished the first 7 clues for the CAL Afghan (the 8th clue only came out today, so I'm right on track!). I'm really enjoying working on the squares. It's fun to challenge myself with more complicated crochet stitches, and I absolutely LOVE the yarn! Amazingly soft for something that's 100% acrylic! I can definitely see myself just getting a large stash of this in various colours as it's really yummy to work with.

... and that it, I think. I've also been working a bit on Henriette's vest and the shawl for Nina, but not enough to be worth showing off.

Off the Needles
I finished the owl embroidery! It's really, really cute, and has made its way over to Nina to be turned into a cushion whenever she has the time for it. It will have a place of honour in my library :-D
The wife of one of my dear friends at work is having a baby soon, so as he was going into total isolation, I decided I'd better make him something quick. Stacey Trock to the rescue, and soon another of her adorable aliens jumped off my hook. I really love the version of Zork!
And finally, I finished my Veneto Sweater!!! I love, love, LOVE how it turned out! So much, in fact, that I have yet to block it, as I kept wanting to wear it! Really need to get that done soon though, as it's sliiiiightly too short in both body and sleeves, and I want to see if it blocks out, or if I have to add a bit of length. I've got plenty of yarn left fortunately, so that part is not a problem.

Woah.... Granted, I haven't actually been crafting all that much recently (I've rediscovered my love of doing jigsaw puzzles :-D ), but still have managed to finish quite a few things and have MORE than a few things on the needles :-)
Off the Needles
I started the Fiesta Mandala Square during the last lockdown as I needed something challenging. It served the purpose nicely, and I learned a lot of new crochet terms. I have NO idea what to do with the finished object though, as it's not really useful for anything. Too bumpy to be a doily, wrong kind of yarn to expand into a blanket, too large to be a pillowcase :-P Ah well, sometimes it definitely is the process rather than the product that matters.

Our neighbours had a baby girl this past November, so obviously I had to make something for her. I loved the Zork I made for Nora (every girl needs an alien), so decided on another of those :-D It flew off the hook and was finished in no time.

Nina had asked me to add a bit of neckline to the Santa Plum cardigan, as it was too wide, so I got it back in October and added 2-3 cm of garter to the neckline - decreasing a bit along the way to draw it in some. She was supposed to try it on before I cast off when they came over for Christmas, but COVID happened, so we had to ship off the presents instead - meaning I found myself one morning rushing to cast off all the stitches before work, so Mum could come pick it up and add to the parcel.

Nina told me that Christian keeps stealing the hat I knit for Jordan last winter, and asked me if I'd knit one for him as well. Of course I said yes! (See above re. being knitworthy). So this is my third time using my own design as a baseline and adding new patterns to the colourwork! It is such a quick knit - I cast on Sunday and cast off yesterday!

On the Needles
My Veneto Sweater is STILL on the needles. I could have finished it several times over, but keep getting sidetracked by other projects. Really silly as I can't WAIT to finish it, and am only missing 1.5 sleeves! Could finish in about a week if I stuck to it :-P I'm really loving how it's turning out!

One of the things I've gotten sidetracked by is a vest for Henriette. It's the most amazingly soft yarn ever, so even though the vest has tons and tons of cables (each row takes me about 15 minutes) I'm really enjoying working on it! The pattern was originally written to be knit in pieces, but that seemed silly, so I adapted it to knit in one piece instead. Took a bit of yarn management when I got to the pockets, but I made it work :-D

Mum and dad got me a cross-stitch kit for Christmas. I used to do HEAPS of cross-stitch, but gave it up 10-12 years ago as it's really not very useful. However, I stumbled across this kit for a pillowcase with owls over the summer and could not stop thinking about it! I'd already decided that if I didn't get it for Christmas, I'd go out and purchase it myself, so was VERY chuffed to unwrap it :-D I started pretty much right away, and have been working diligently at it. Each owl background takes me 2-3 hours, but I'm finally almost done and can soon move on to the detailing. I'd forgotten how much I love doing embroidery! May have to pick up some of my old kits again, even if it does take time away from my other crafting.

Awhile back I came across some gorgeous yarn that just screamed "Nina!" at me. It took awhile for us to find the perfect pattern for it, but with the fiesta square under my belt I finally felt ready to tackle a crochet shawl, and got started this past weekend.

Finally, Liz and I decided to join a CAL (Crochet-A-Long) together. It's a design for an afghan made up of 25 squares, with one square being published each week. The pattern for the third square will be made available later today, and I'm really enjoying working on it. The yarn is just cheap acrylic, but surprisingly good quality - really yummy to work with and SO soft! Can't wait to see the finished project.

It's too warm to use just now, but will come in VERY handy over the winter. This is definitely more to be used as a wrap rather than a shawl. It's wonderfully soft, and I love how the lace looks after blocking. I originally wanted to make this as I needed a shawl for fancy occasions -- we'll see if I actually have any need for it like that, or if it'll be a comfort wrap instead.

Last time I showed off a giraffe I'd made for one of my coworkers. I gave it to her Friday before last and we got talking about crocheting softies in general, so I showed her all the other patterns Stacey Trock has designed. One of my other coworkers saw this fish and immediately fell in love, so over the weekend I decided to make it for him :-D It was a really quick project, so Monday I could bring it with me and pass on to him (good thing too, as we got sent back home to work just two days later! Bah!). He laughed so much that he cried when he saw it, and was both very touched that I'd made it for him and very impressed that I'd finished it just over the weekend ;-) Such a gratifying response! Now that we're working from home again, he's placed it right next to his computer, and it's apparently his "stress fish" :P

Nina asked me for "a hat like the one I knit Jordan last year". Since that was my own design and I had enough scrap yarn it was easy enough to fulfill the request. I played around with the shapes a bit more, and am quite happy with the end result :)

Finally, I've finished a quick test-knit for some decorative leaves. They had such a fun construction that I couldn't pass them up, and are a great way to use up scraps. I don't actually decorate for autumn usually, but they might make for fun coasters.

On the Needles
Only one thing actively being worked on at the moment. After a FAR too long hibernation, I finally picked up my Adventurous Cardigan again. I started it in the very beginning of this year, but put it aside when Corona hit, and for some reason just never picked it back up again. But with the temperatures dropping, it's cool enough to work with thick wool again, so I'm back at it. I still have another 4 rows to go before separating for the sleeves, but at the moment each row takes me 20 minutes due to all the cables!! But I knew I'd be in it for the long haul when I cast it on, so we'll see how long it takes me to finish. Right now I'm thinking the autumn of 2021 is most realistic ;-)

Mariahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14280854114229038266noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6801294512243352066.post-30889660260132506652020-08-19T03:49:00.000-07:002020-08-19T03:49:46.141-07:00WIP Wednesday - week 34Haven't done one of these posts in FOREVER, so it's gonna be long :D

On the Needles
I needed something new to knit for our vacation (shush! I did! None of my other current projects were summer-house worthy) and of course couldn't make up my mind, so I ended up casting on not one, but TWO new things... and then promptly abandoned one of them, and have been working almost monogamously (at least until it got too hot) on the other.

One was a sweater with a colour-work yoke. I had two colourways I knew HAD to be used together, and originally planned to use for a shawl. But I never could find the right one, and then suddenly this sweater jumped out at me. I love the way it's turning out, even if the yoke does take FOREVER to knit.
The other was a shawl I've been wanting to knit forever (and actually had planned for the yarns above), and rightfully so. The body practically flew off the needles, and I finished that part of it in less than a week. The applied border takes quite awhile longer (41 repeats of the lace at 50 minutes each), but I love an applied border, and the lace is very intuitive, so it's a fun knit :-) Which is probably also why I've blown through this so quickly. Unfortunately it's been too hot to knit with wool for the past two weeks and I MISS working on it!!
As always, I have two pairs of socks on the needles. One with a bit of a pattern, and one totally vanilla, that I can knit on during meetings.
Finally, I've returned to working on the Fiesta Square. When it's this hot, I really can't work with anything other than cotton, so it was good to return to this for a bit. I only have 2-3 rounds left to go now! Of course, each round takes 1.5hrs by now, so the end is still awhile off.
Off the Needles
I finished Nina's cardigan! (Although she got to sew in the buttons herself ;-) ). It's a gorgeous colour on her, but unfortunately a bit too large in the neck opening, so I have to figure out if I can draw that in somehow.
One of my colleagues is pregnant and due this November, so I decided to make some things for her :-D I'll probably knit something too, but for now I wanted to crochet a soft toy. Meet Nellie the Giraffe! The recipient and I are friends on Instagram, so I won't be showing it off there until after it's been delivered.
.I FINALLY got two pairs of slippers off the needles. I offered to knit these for a friend of a friend, as I'd been wanting to knit up the pattern forever.. unfortunately the yarn I got hold off was splitty as anything, so the cuff took a lot longer than it should have, and in the end, it was really quite dull! :-P But a quick knit, at least. Each slipper took me only 2-3 evenings to finish.
I also finished two more pairs of socks - both presents for friends of mine. One has been shipped off already, the other is waiting until I get a few more pairs done, as she's offered to take any and all socks off my hands, if I feel like I have too many in my drawer ;-)
I've been pretty low-key with my knitting, so nothing really fancy to show off, but at least I have a few finished objects by now.

First a pink cardigan for Nora! Michala sent me a video of her asking kindly when it would be finished... I hadn't even cast on yet!!! :-O Of course that was just not good enough, so I immediately made sure to remedy that (fortunately I HAD swatched at least), and sent her regular updates. Despite being tiny it took a LONG time to knit, as it's knit on a really small gauge. I'd changed the pattern to have buttons all the way down (instead of just closing at the neck), but forgot to adjust the body accordingly, so unfortunately it's a tad too tight if all buttons are closed :-P That's easily remedied by a larger button band though, so I'll probably do that at some point.

But fortunately Nora loves it :-D - she picked out the buttons herself!
I finally finished the Turtle Trail shawlette I started last year. It's knit from some mystery lace yarn Liz gave me, which absolutely, positively has some NZ possum in it! It is so AMAZINGLY soft! It will be a firm favourite come winter for sure!

Oh, and can I just say that I love applied edgings? They're so much fun to knit! :-D

With these things cast off, I've started another cardigan for Nina, as she asked for one for her birthday. It's slow going as it has a LOT of lace, but I'm really loving the way it's turning out. It's made from cotton, which isn't my usual fare, but very soft cotton, so it doesn't hurt my hands :)
I've had heaps of time to knit, but haven't really felt much like it. I needed something that required quite a bit of focus, as most of my knitting was just too mindless. At the same time it had to be something fairly small, as I did not feel up to the task of tackling a large sweater or shawl, so both of the WIPs from the last post were out too.

Instead I had quite a few days with no knitting at all, and then just finally decided to cast on something new. I'd discovered that the level of focus that e.g. solving a difficult sudoku takes was perfect! It required almost all my attention but in a very limited space, and thus seemed approachable. So I set my mind on finding the crafting equivalent of sudoku! I knew it would probably have to be crochet, as I'm still very much a beginner there, so searched through ravelry for something suitable, and finally came across the Fiesta Square - basically it starts as a mandala and grows into a small blanket. Lots of stitches I'd never seen before, lots of techniques I had to google - Perfect!

And it really was. The first 3-4 rounds took me about 2 hours to complete as I had to google everything and check out tutorial videos. Alas... apparently I'm a quick learner, and now it's not nearly as difficult any longer :-P I know - I know, that sounds like such a humble brag, but it did kinda defeat the purpose. Ah well - I'm still loving the way it's turning out, and am having lots of fun making it regardless.

I also turned to my spinning wheel for awhile, and actually managed to finish a small skein! I'd love to take a class at some point, and get some pointers. I'm 100% self-taught and KNOW I'm making a ton of mistakes :-P

Now that I'm feeling better and have gotten more used to the situation, I've been able to pick up a few older WIPs as well - still nothing mindless and nothing too big, but at least things suitable for TV knitting.

I've finally reached the applied edging for the Turtle Trail Shawlette :-D I still have quite a ways to go yet, as applied edgings take FOREVER, but I don't mind as I actually really love working with this yarn! It's a mystery yarn that Liz gave me last year sometime, but I'm absolutely certain that it's got at least some possum in the mix. It's got that delicious softness that makes it so instantly recognizable! Unfortunately it didn't turn out quite as big as I'd hoped, but blocking should give me enough added length that it'll still be useful. Of course I'll finish it just in time for summer, but at least I can look forward to wearing it next winter :)

After a break of probably a few years(!!!) I also pulled my Vivid blanket back out again. The lace is detailed enough to keep my focus, while each square is small enough that it doesn't feel like too huge an undertaking, and I actually finished three more squares over the weekend! So that's put me just over half-way through and strangely keen to FINALLY finish it :-P I have enough for 30 - perhaps 36 squares, so that should make quite a nice lap blanket.
It turned out exactly like I'd hoped it would, and I'll be wearing the crap out of it the rest of this winter. All my mods worked, and there isn't a single thing I'd change about it :-D
With that finished, I decided it was high time that I got started on the Adventurous Cardigan as Mum and Dad gave me the yarn for it for my birthday. I cast on last week and am just over half-way with the back collar. SO MANY CABLES!!! ❤️ It's going to take forever to knit, and chances are I won't have it done until 2021 sometime, but it will be WELL worth it.

I've also picked up the Starflake shawl once again. The yarn isn't quite as nice to work with as I'd hoped (two really thin strands held together), but it's lovely soft, so the finished item will be lovely :-) For the sake of my own sanity I decided against the brioche version, and am just doing the plain garter stitch version instead.
Finally, I finished a lovey for a friend of mine, who's due in April sometime. I used the leftover cotton from Nora's mermaid's tail, and just change colours as I ran out. It was a really, really quick piece and I love the way it turned out :-D
Aaand it's taken me more than a month to actually get around to writing one... go figure. Of course this means that I have quite a bit to show off, but I'll try to keep it fairly short.

Finished objects
Apparently there's a baby-boom at work at the moment, with 4 colleagues/partners of colleagues being pregnant and due within the next few months, so I've been knitting baby stuff like crazy. So far I've finished 2 baby surprise jackets and (almost) 3 pairs of booties.

... They are ridiculously cute though :-P

I finally finished my Jillian sweater :-D I was a bit worried about it, as it had a bit of a weird fit prior to blocking, and I wasn't quite sure if it would work. Fortunately it mostly evened out while blocking, and though the fit isn't quite right, it's still perfectly serviceable, and I'm happy with how it turned out.
I've also finished the Aranami Shawl - playing a SERIOUS game of yarn chicken near the end, and ended up finishing my cast off with less than 1 gram remaining! It was a surprisingly dull knit, strangely enough, so I don't see myself making any more of those.
On the needles
With all the finished items, I actually only have one active WIP at the moment. I'm working on a(nother) blanket for myself, and have finished the first quartet of squares. It's slow going, but I think it'll look good when done.
BG: ever since I made my first Happy Hippo, Nina exclaimed over it, and mentioned that she had to have one once they got a permanent place of residence again. Well, this summer they moved back to Denmark, so I knew I had to get started on one, but had several other things I wanted to knit her first. Those all got done, and at the start of November I arranged to come visit them weekend before last... that would give me just 3 weeks to make a Happy Hippo for her... would I be able to do it? I looked at the two others I'd made and saw they had taken 2 and 6 weeks respectively, so I figured - yes, I would!

So since then I've been working pretty much exclusively on that (well - that and the owl puffs I made for my colleagues) finishing FRIDAY as I was heading off to visit them Saturday! I was in such a rush that I forgot all about the safety eyes until AFTER the last hexagon had been put in place! Ah well... it's not like Nina's in much danger of pulling them out and swallowing them, so I figured I'd take the risk of not undoing all that stitching ;-)
I'd packed it in my backpack and just let the head peak out, and she literally squealed when she saw it. She had had no idea I was even working on it. Awesome!!! :-D

I also got to hand off Jordan's hat, and fortunately it fit :-)
I'd brought the owl puffs to work with me Friday before last... I felt a bit silly about passing them out to my colleagues, as I didn't really know how they would react, but fortunately they liked them... or at least pretended to while I was around ;-)
They're fun to make, so I was happy to agree as long as she didn't want too many too soon. In the end she asked for another four by Christmas - that I can manage, and in fact finished the last one yesterday!
With those things out of the way, I have had time to knit some more on existing projects... for the first time in about a MONTH! The Jillian sweater has seen quite a bit of progress, and I'm just about finished with the hip increases.

I've gotten quite a bit more done on the Aranami shawl as the pattern's really easy to learn off by heart, so I tend to bring it along with me when I go out. I'm almost done with the fourth colour :-)

I'm also working on a blanket. I've been wanting a knitted throw for ages, but my cozy memories blanket is still YEARS away from being finished (which is fine!), so I found some cheap yarn and decided to just go for it! In my head I knew exactly what I wanted (a 'sampler afghan' of sorts), but I couldn't find anything quite right on ravelry, and my first attempt turned out a mess, so I'm just going for simple mitered squares again instead :-D At least with all the garter, it'll be nice and squishy!
Since then, I haven't touched either of those things AT ALL, but have cast on a bunch of new things instead! Go figure...

I still really want to finish at least one of the two sweaters for this winter, but I have some gift knitting that I want to get out of the way first. Fortunately that means I have 2 1/2 finished objects to show off this time :-)

I finished the Margrathea shawl for Nina while I was in Exeter... playing a SERIOUS case of yarn chicken for my bind off! I ended up with less than 2 grams remaining. But it's bound off and blocked and absolutely gorgeous :-D Can't wait to give it to her!

Weekend before last, Nina wrote me to say that Jordan could really use a new winter hat if I didn't mind knitting one for him. Of course I didn't! I love knitting hats, but don't often wear them myself, so I was glad to get this chance to get one on the needles anyway. I wrote him to ask what he wanted: "Blue and black - something with diamonds, squares and stripes!" Immediately as he said that, I knew exactly what he meant... but utterly failed to find anything along those lines on Ravelry!!! What's a doting auntie to do? She makes up the pattern herself, of course! As it turned out, it was a super-quick knit, and I finished it in just a day... and I'm actually kinda proud enough of the hat, that I'm thinking of putting it up on Ravelry myself :-P

As for the half-finished object... I've been wanting to knit something for my team at work for quite awhile. They're really awesome people and have all commented positively on my knitting at some point or the other (we have a weekly internal status meeting where I've been allowed to sit and knit for the past few years :-D ) Besides, they're pretty much the best colleagues ever. When I stumbled across the pattern for some super cute owl puffs, I knew I had to make them for them! They each take about 1.5hrs to make, so I should be able to finish before Christmas... otherwise it'll just be a New Years gift instead ;-)

The finished objects first - I finished the Katia sweater earlier this month, so Nina could get it when I saw her on October 12th. I am SO happy with how it turned out, and it fits her perfectly :-D It's not a colour combo I'd necessarily have chosen myself, but it worked really well and is SO right for her. And of course - being the ridiculously knitworthy person she is - Nina made sure to coordinate her makeup to it!
I recently discovered a group on FB that makes "pocket friends" for Danish ambulances. "Pocket friends" are small 7x13cm stuffed toys that EMTs can give to sick/injured children to offer a bit of comfort. Of course I had to join, and I've finished 4 so far, and am planning to make more.
Yesterday I finished the socks I'm making for a colleague of mine. I'm glad she said she likes bright colours, because it is LOUD!! But she squees every time she sees it, so I'm taking that as a good sign.

As for my works in progress, I decided to have a birthday cast on (i.e. a guilt-free cast on because it's my birthday. "Unlike 'a guilt-free cast on because it's Friday?" Nina asked... Hush, sis!) this year, and after a LOT of wavering back and forth I ended up with a modified version of the Jillian pullover. I knew I wanted something with stripes, but couldn't find a stripy project with the neckline I desired. This one had EXACTLY the right neckline, but wasn't stripy... very easily changed! I've just reached the waist decreases, although I've moved those further in towards the center of the sweater - Amy Herzog-style.

It's a quick knit, and I would have been much further along, if it hadn't been for me casting on yet ANOTHER sweater :-D One of my colleagues has this amazing green knitted sweater that she wears all the time. I complimented it the other week, and she immediately told me that a friend of hers had knit it for her - if I'd like the pattern? Uhm... yes, please!! I bought the yarn a few days later, and cast on that same evening (after doing only a cursory swatch... schhh... I'm living on the edge!). It's thick yarn held double on huge needles, so should knit up really fast! And the yarn is AMAZINGLY soft, so I can't wait to get to wear it!

And finally - because all of the above obviously isn't enough! - I decided to cast on Stephen West's newest Mystery shawl - the Starflake. I usually stay away from MKALs as I prefer to know what the finished product looks like before I commit to a knit, but I'd seen the two first clues and LOVED the way it looked, so couldn't help myself any longer. I didn't have any suitable fingering weight yarn in my stash, but loads and loads of lace-weight, so I frogged a long-languishing sweater that has been on the needles since 2015, so I'm obviously never going to finish that one and am using that yarn held double instead.
No finished objects, but three works in progress that have all seen significant progress.

Nina's sweater might not look all that much different from last time, but it now has both a neckband and 3/4 of a sleeve! I could have gotten further last night, but had reached the point where I needed to start the colourwork and was too lazy to get up from the couch and go get the green yarn :-P The colours are a bit washed out here, but it looks really awesome IRL :-D

The sweater was too large to bring away with me though, so I cast on two new things last week :-D First up - the Aranami shawl which I've been eager to cast on for quite awhile. Not that I really need another shawl, but I figured it would work well as travel knitting, and could make for a nice present for someone. It turned out to be the PERFECT travel knitting project, so I knit on it pretty much every time we were back in our room. Super easy to learn the pattern off by heart, and so extremely potato-chippy :) It looks a bit weird at the moment, as I decided to do the entire left side before I started "filling in" the tiers - but I wanted to see how the colours played together and besides... it's my knitting! I can break the rules if I want to ;-)

I also cast on a pair of socks for a colleague of mine. She's moved here from Spain and gets cold in winter, so I offered to knit her something. She immediately jumped at the offer, and asked for some hand knit socks in the brightest, most happiest colour I could find! As luck would have it, I had some almost neon bright colour in my stash, so could cast on right away. I wanted something a bit more intricate than plain vanilla, so found an easily adaptable pattern with some faux cable. They made for perfect car knitting, so I got quite a bit of the leg done there.
